7 Questions to Ask Before Buying Any CBD Brand
The CBD market has very little standardization, which means the difference between a well-made product and a mislabeled one usually isn't visible on the label — it's in whether the brand can answer these seven questions honestly.
1. Can they show you a current, batch-matched COA?
Every legitimate product should have a Certificate of Analysis from an independent lab, tied to the specific batch number printed on your bottle — not a generic report the brand reuses across every batch it sells. If a brand can't produce this on request, that's the single biggest red flag in the category.
2. Where is the hemp actually grown?
Hemp is a bioaccumulator — it pulls whatever is in the soil it's grown in, contaminants included. Brands that are confident in their sourcing will tell you where their hemp comes from and typically grow or source domestically under agricultural oversight, rather than staying vague about origin.
3. Is testing done by an independent lab, not in-house?
"Lab tested" means very little if the lab is owned by the brand itself. Look for a named, independent, accredited testing lab — one you can look up separately from the brand's own website.
4. Does the label actually match the lab report?
This is where a lot of brands quietly fail. Compare the potency claimed on the label against the cannabinoid panel on the COA. A gummy labeled 25mg should test close to 25mg — not 40% under or over.
5. Is manufacturing done in a registered, certified facility?
Look for FDA-registered facility manufacturing and, ideally, GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) certification. This tells you the production process itself is held to a documented standard, not just the finished product.
6. Are THC claims specific, not vague?
"Trace amounts" and "virtually THC-free" aren't numbers — they're marketing language standing in for a number the brand isn't showing you. A trustworthy brand states an actual figure: "ND" (non-detect) for THC-free products, or a specific sub-0.3% number for full- or broad-spectrum.
7. What happens if the product doesn't work for you?
A brand confident in its own formulation usually backs it with a real return or satisfaction guarantee, not just a standard no-returns policy buried in the fine print.
Where Olsiva stands on all seven
We're not going to pretend every brand in this category fails these questions — plenty of legitimate ones don't. But we built our own process around being able to answer all seven without hesitation: every batch is independently tested, and results are published and searchable by batch number on our Lab Results page. That's not a claim you have to take on faith — it's a document you can go check yourself, for us or for anyone else you're considering.
